Last week I took a look at some of my favorite Comic Book Movies which got me thinking about all the Failed Comic Book Movies (FCBM). And for me a fail means it didn’t live up to personal expectations and box office expectations, also movies that just kinda sucked in my opinion.
Here is a list, in no particular order, of my Failed Comic Book Movies.
Batman & Robin
With this film Joel Schumacher nearly killed the Batman franchise. It killed a sequel that was slated to have Scarecrow, Man-Bat and Harley Quinn. But because it was so universally panned by critics and audiences Warner Brothers shelved plans of making a fifth sequel. Also…. Holy Bat Nipples!
Catwoman
So this was a good idea in theory. In reality… wow… not so much. It just wasn’t good. You should know your movie sucks when a rough cut of the trailer is put online and slammed so hard it gets pulled down and replaced with one that contains no dialog. This movie was so bad that it has nearly killed Hallie Berry’s career. Watching the trailer again, just makes me cringe.
Hulk
To this day I am still trying to figure out what Ang Lee was trying to do or what he was thinking when he made this movie. It was just not good in any way. Who could believe that Nick Nolte was a brilliant scientist?
Steel
Shaquille O’Neal is a superhero…. ummmmm…. yeah… Enough said.
Elektra
This was a spin-off from another stinker of a movie, Daredevil. By her own admission Jennifer Garner said that the movie was horrible. The only reason she did the movie was because of contractual obligations to the studio. Which now goes to prove that just because the contract says you HAVE to do it, doesn’t mean you SHOULD do it. If you watch it, you can tell most of the actors are just going through the motions.
Daredevil
Speaking of Daredevil… this movie had so much potential and was pretty close…. but… yeah. You know you have a bad movie when the federal constitutional monarchy of Malaysia bans your film.
Honorable mentions go to Ghost Rider, Judge Dredd, Spider-Man 3, Superman Returns, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and Green Lantern.
There it is, for better or worse. That is my list of Failed Comic Book Movies.
