Irony Abounds In My Head

Let me explain. No, that will take too long. Let me sum up. It has been raining for the last couple days and it doesn’t look to clear up anytime soon. Yet I have had this song stuck in my head all weekend. Must be a case of mind over matter. Whatever it is, this is just a catchy song that always puts a smile on my face!

And so does the image I have included.

Happy Monday everyone!!!

Anna Kendrick – Cups (Pitch Perfect’s When I’m Gone)

Anna Kendrick

Anna Kendrick

Anna Kendrick is awesome. Everything I have seen her in from ‘Up in the Air’ to ‘50/50’ to ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’ to ‘Pitch Perfect’, she has been just that pitch perfect. Even her voice over in ‘Paranorman’ was one of the better things about that movie. (I have not seen a single Twilight movie, but I am sure she would be the only think I like about them if I did watch.)

Now she has made a video for the song she sang at the auditions in ‘Pitch Perfect’ and I believe I’ve watched it at least a dozen times. I can’t get enough of Anna Kendrick. We need to hang out.

If you want to see some bonus Anna Kendrick (and frankly who doesn’t?) Check out my post for the Ben Folds Five’s song ‘Do It Anyway’. It has Anna Kendrick, Chris Hardwick and the Fraggles! Throw in Ben Folds and you have a quadfecta of awesome!

Huey Lewis and the News

Now this, among a myriad of things, makes me feel old; Huey Lewis and the News’ album ‘Sports’ turns 30 this year. 30! Huey was 33 when ‘Sports’ came out which means he turns 63 in July of this year. WTF? Where has the time gone?

I remember that HLatN was everywhere back then. Just about every time you turned on the radio one of their songs was playing on the radio.  ‘Sports’ had 5 charting singles on it, 4 that hit the top 10, and it was certified 7x platinum just in the US. The follow up ‘Fore!’ continued the success with 5 top 10 hits, 2 number 1 hits and it was certified 3x platinum. Oh yeah, in between those two albums they had their first #1 hit off the ‘Back to the Future’ soundtrack. It lost the Best Original Song Oscar to ‘Say You, Say Me’ by Lionel Richie from the ‘White Nights’ soundtrack.

Needless to say HLatN has had a long and storied career. I can always throw on their music and be happy. Which for me is the hallmark of a good band. Here are a few of my favorites. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

Damn Yankees

In 1989 Tommy Shaw from Styx, Jack Blades from Night Ranger, Ted Nugent from, well, being Uncle Teddy, and (at the time) little known drummer Michael Cartellone (he of course join the legendary band Lynyrd Skynyrd) got together and formed the supergroup Damn Yankees; and high school dances in the early 90’s would forever be changed. Their self-titled first album went double-platinum and produced four Billboard Rock top 10 hits. Their sophomore effort didn’t fare as well. Granted it went gold and had three songs that hit the top 10 but general was much less popular than their first go around. Despite having a song use in the Jean-Claude Van Damme “classic” ‘Nowhere to Run’.

Why you may ask is Damn Yankees being featured today on Music Monday? Fair question. The answer is twofold. First fold; it is prom season and one of the songs to follow is a prom staple for me. The second fold; another one of their songs has been stuck in my head for DAYS… it needs to get out. So, ladies and gents, enjoy some 90’s hair rock.

#MusicMonday

I have been in a musical rut as of late. I just haven’t been listening to a whole lot of music. I have however been watching way too much TV. So today I am dedicating fully to music. The whole day listening to songs I know and love to see if I can break free from my musical funk. I shall bring you with me for the first few steps on today’s journey. Here are the first five songs I get when I load up the player and hit shuffle.

Half the country is experiencing some sort of wintery weather. So on this snow day I figured I would load up the old media player with all my tunage and hit shuffle once again. I figured I would bring a little random into our musical life. Not unlike what Mother Nature is doing with the weather outside. Here are the first five songs that happened to pop up. I hope these will help you make it through this weather filled Monday.

Driving through New York City there was only one radio station I would have on; Sirius Radio channel 32 ‘The Bridge’. For me it wasn’t even a choice. Music is always with me, as a soundtrack for my life and the smooth sounds from ‘The Bridge’ were the only ones I wanted to hear while I drove through the crowded streets of NYC. Be it a dark, dreary, rainy night driving through Manhattan with Billy Joel’s ‘New York State of Mind’ playing or Simon & Garfunkel singing about ‘Cecilia’ it was just fitting. But early in the morning while the city was stumbling home after a long night of debauchery, while I was headed to work, steam flowing up from under the streets, one voice always seemed… well, right. That voice belonged to Harry Chapin. Yet another beautiful artist lost long before they should have been. I posted one of his songs before but here are a few more that always will remind me of those early Sunday morning drives in NYC.

Stella Starlight Trio

I am always on the lookout, or rather ear out, for new and interesting music. When I find a new artist I take to the interwebs to find out more about them. It is one of those things that makes me a nerd. When I heard the Stella Starlight Trio I immediately connected with them and the song they were singing. It was a cover of Simple Minds’ ‘Don’t You’. Love the original and really love SST’s jazzy cover of it.

So when I got home I went online to see what I could see. What I found were five fantastic covers of five fantastic songs by this quirky jazzy trio… that I couldn’t find a thing about. I don’t know where they are from. I can’t find any more songs than the five I have below. And I can’t find out who these folks are! If anyone can fill me in, I would love that! But for now, please take a listen to the five covers by Stella Starlight Trio and enjoy!

John Conlee

For the vast majority of my life when I go to bed I do so with either the TV or a radio on. It helps distract my brain from the many thoughts running around inside of it. Plus it comforts me; it is like having a friend in the room with me. Some of my earliest memories are of lying in bed at night listening to the classic country music (well it wasn’t classic then, it was contemporary) coming from the small radio beside my bed. The country artists would sing me to sleep every night. One voice in particular always stuck with me.

John Conlee’s voice has always brought me comfort. Listening to him and his music is like hearing a story from a lifelong friend. I grew up listening to his music but it wasn’t till I was grown up that I truly became a fan.

I know country music isn’t for everyone. It is usually the butt of a lot of jokes. But it shouldn’t matter. People like what they like. I don’t only listen to country. The first two presets on my Sirius Radio are channel 31 ‘The Coffeehouse’ and channel 32 ‘The Bridge’. I like what I like, so should you, like what you like; let the naysayers be damned! For your consideration, here are a few of my favorite John Conlee songs so you can try them out.
