Random Movie Day 3: Bring On The Funny

The Babymakers

Olivia Munn and Paul Schneider in ‘The Babymakers’

I have been on a movie watching tear as of late. I have been watching a ton of movies because I find myself with a ton of time on my hands. So for this installment of RMD I am grouping together a bunch of the comedies I have consumed. There were a few laughs and a few surprises.

This was the big comedy from last summer. Written by, directed by and starred this year’s Oscar host Seth MacFarlane. Who, I thought, did a fantastic job doing one of the toughest jobs in Hollywood. He was charming, funny and he push the envelope just enough. I enjoyed his turn in the spotlight.

On to the movie. It was a well-constructed script and it was executed just as well. He and Mark Wahlberg played off each other superbly. They had great timing. And of course Mila Kunis was her usual awesome self. The movie had its vulgar comedy yet had that touch of heart that all good comedies like this need. I enjoyed it. The only problem I had was after the movie was over I couldn’t get the freaking ‘Flash Gordon’ theme song out of my head.

This is a good compilation of some funny scenes from the movie

Here Comes The Boom

I am a Kevin James fan. I have enjoyed every one of his movies; yes including ‘The Zookeeper’. Just like ‘Ted’ this movie had heart to it. Yes it was a bit predictable. And yes you knew how it was going to end, but with a movie like this, that is what you want. You want the underdog main character to save the day and get the girl. That is why we go to these types of movies; to show us that sometimes, the little guy gets to win. I say watch this and enjoy.

Here is a short featurette about the film.

Hit & Run

Dax Shepard has grown on me. I really love him on ‘Parenthood’, which is one of the best networks shows out there right now. So because of that I sought out this movie. Plus it has his girlfriend/fiancée Kristen Bell. She is worth giving just about any movie a shot. (She happens to be in one of my favorite musical comedies of all time ‘Reefer Madness: The Movie Musical’.  That needs to be seen by more people.)

So I sat down and watched the film. It had its funny moments, but the best part of the movie was the Lincoln Continental. Which is actually owned by Dax, as were the majority of vehicles that were used in the movie. That car was bad ass. Speaking of cars, the chase scenes in ‘Hit & Run’ were some of the best of the past year. You could tell that the makers of the movie were fans of the old school car chase movies of the 70’s and 80’s. It is worth a watch just for that.

Here is a great moment from the movie. It is the start of the first car chase in the movie featuring the aforementioned badass Lincoln.

This is written by David Wain and Ken Marino, both former players from the MTV sketch show ‘The State’. If you enjoyed that show you will enjoy this. It had its absurd moments but there was quite a bit of funny thrown in. Not the best movie I watched of this group but it wasn’t horrible. If you were a fan of ‘The State’ I say watch it.

The Campaign

I am a Will Ferrell fan. I have seen all his movies. I have liked all his movies. This isn’t my favorite but it still has some laughable moments. The chemistry with he and Zach Galifianakis was good, but it had some off moments. It might be how Will’s and Zach’s characters were a little too over the top at times. A little too dumb at moments. I think if they reigned in at times this could have been much funnier. I did laugh out loud several times but it wasn’t consistent enough to get a full recommendation.

The Babymakers

The Broken Lizard boys (most of them anyway) are back in this comedic farce. Last year I wrote about the trailer for this movie which gives you a synopsis of the plot. It is a funny premise. I just wasn’t impressed with Paul Schneider in the leading role. He is an excellent actor but it seemed that his heart wasn’t in this performance. He did a serviceable job but he wasn’t perfect. Olivia Munn on the other hand…. She is turning into a really great actress. She is fantastic in ‘The Newsroom’. She was great in ‘Magic Mike’ (Yes I saw Magic Mike and really liked it!) and she was fantastic in this. This woman has come a long way from her days on G4’s ‘Attack of the Show’ where, wearing a French maid costume, jumped into a giant pie for ‘National Pie Week’. But props need to go to my Twitter buddy Jay Chandrasekhar. He did a good job directing and an even better job as the Indian gangster Ron Jon. As per the usual, you were damn funny man.
