Vampire Academy: Blood Sisters

I’ve been hearing about this book series for quite a while and had known this franchise was in production and would be launching soon. But I’d never shown much interest in either. Here is the story being told in this the first, of what we can expect, of many more movies to come.

’Vampire Academy’ tells the legend of Rose Hathaway (Zoey Deutch) and Lissa Dragomir (Lucy Fry), two 17-year-old girls who attend a hidden boarding school for Moroi (mortal, peaceful Vampires) and Dhampirs (half-vampire/half-human guardians). Rose, a rebellious Guardian-in-training and her best friend, Lissa — a royal vampire Princess – have been on the run when they are captured and returned to St.Vladamirs Academy, the very place where they believe their lives may be in most jeopardy. Thrust back into the perils of Moroi Society and high school, Lissa struggles to reclaim her status while Rose trains with her mentor and love-interest, Dimitri (Danila Kozlovsky), to guarantee her place as Lissa’s guardian. Rose will sacrifice everything to protect Lissa from those who intend to exploit her from within the Academy walls and the Strigoi (immortal, evil vampires) who hunt her kind from outside its sanctuary.

From what it looks like to me (and I am juuuuuust outside the wheelhouse for this one) it looks like Twilight meets Harry Potter. I’m sure the books were enjoyable, and this might be too, but I’m not sold. The costuming, sets and overall look of the film seem good.

The script is what gives me the most interest. It was written by Daniel Waters who held the pen (or keyboard) for ‘Demolition Man’, ‘Batman Returns’, ‘Heathers’, ‘Hudson Hawk’ and ‘The Adventures of Ford Fairlane’. (Hey, don’t judge, I liked it.) So the ‘watchability’ of this may be ratcheted up from young adult to a tad older.  The one thing I ask: Sunlight KILLS VAMPIRES! (Unless, apparently, they drink fairy blood) Keep this as cannon fact.

There is potential. I just need a bit more convincing. This will have a major mass release on Valentine’s Day 2014. I’m sure if you threw a rock you will hit a theater that this movie will be playing in February 14th. Alas, sadly, I don’t think I will be one of the masses headed to see this in the theater…. But, start the standing in line by crazy tweens and teens…………… Now.

The good vampires in this, the Moroi, are still weakened by the sun – which is why they have a night time schedule for school. The bad vampires, the Strigoi, can’t go in the sunlight however and will die. And no, none of the vampires sparkle in this(:
