Over the weekend I had the chance to see this film. Whatever expectations you may have about Pixar movies will be exceeded. This was fantastic. It will make you laugh. It will make you cry. It will leave you with that warm fuzzy feeling that you always get from a Pixar movie… And the animation was unbelievable. It was beautiful.
The story is about Princess Merida and her determination of being her own woman. She butts heads with her overbearing mother who has been grooming her to become the Queen she wants and knows she can be. In an act of pride and ignorance, Merida flees the gathering of the four clans. The gathering was assembled to find the most suitable partner for Merida’s betrothal. While riding through the forest she stumbles upon some magical Wisps that she had seen in her childhood. These spirits are said to show you to where you want to go. In this case they lead her to a witch’s hovel where Merida tells the resident witch she wished to change her fate by changing her Mother.
I won’t delve any deeper because the remaining plot needs to be experienced. It really is a fantastically crafted screenplay and the heroine is a true role model for young women. She shows strength, independence, heart and ultimately, true understanding and love. I recommend seeing this immediately and owning it as soon as it is made available. This is now in the top two of my all-time favorite Pixar movies…. The other of course is ‘Up’.
