I continue on my journey to catch up on all the movies I have missed of the last year or so. With this one I was in the mood for some action so I sought out some pulse pounding flicks to keep me company. Several hits and a couple misses but overall a good day.
Bullet To The Head
There is no denying who the alpha male in action movies is, was and will always be. Sly still can bring the badassness that we have come to know and love. In this adaptation of Alexis Nolent’s French graphic novel Du Plomb Dans La Tete. I haven’t read it, mostly because I don’t know French, but the artwork is fantastic and the movie really tried to capture that feel. If you are in the mood for good action check this one out. Plus it has Sly fighting with a freaking ax!
This movie you can avoid. For me it was just too preachy and in your face about drug and alcohol abuse. That subject matter has been done much better in many other films. (Leaving Las Vegas comes to mind) I like Denzel. The man is a fantastic actor but I just couldn’t connect with his character in this one. John Goodman was very entertaining but the only thing you need to watch from the movie is the crash scene. And here it is:
When Christopher Walken and Colin Farrell are the most normal characters in a movie you know it has to be an interesting film. And Sam Rockwell is as always awesome. I suggest checking this one out.
The Amazing Spider-Man
I have enjoyed the Sam Raimi trifecta so I was leery about a reboot of the franchise; that is why I didn’t catch this one in the theater last summer. That was a mistake. I liked the story line and the use of Gwen Stacy, which opens up the fantastic story line from the early 70’s comic books. The potential for this iteration of the franchise is sky high. Can’t wait for the sequel in 2014!
The Raid: Redemption
I saw trailers for this and Scuzz even wrote about it. I wanted to see this and finally did. HOLY CRAP! This was un-freaking-real. The hand to hand fighting was like watching art in motion. It was beautiful. If you are a fan of that sort of thing then you NEED to see this movie. The movie was quite violent but it was like watching a symphony. I really enjoyed this. You should watch this. It must be done.
I love John Cusack. He played Poe very well but the movie was very predictable. It had a couple good moments but overall it wasn’t that great. I recommend catching this on cable or pay cable channel if you are a John Cusack fan.
The Hunger Games
I haven’t read any of the books in this series so I have no frame of reference. I went into this with no preconceived notions and no expectations. That said, it wasn’t bad. The storyline, for the most part, was a rehashing of ‘The Most Dangerous Game’, ‘Gymkata’ or ‘The Running Man’ where people hunt people for sport/entertainment. I am curious to see how the second movie plays out.
The Expendables 2
I enjoyed the first one but it had its issues. Sly even said he didn’t know what kind of movie it was supposed to be. He said he didn’t know if he wanted it more of a comedy, straightforward action film or what and it showed. But in this one they focused in on what really worked in the first film and drilled down some of the characters and fleshed them out more. The action is plentiful and good time, old school, 80’s action flick action and one liners. It was enjoyable and worth watching.
