There is a new catchphrase being used in Hollywood. People have been complaining about movies that are earmarked as ‘Based on a true story’. For once Tinsletown listen… sort of. They won’t stop making these types of movies because, let’s face it, real life is some compelling sh*t. So now instead of ‘Based on a true story’ we get ‘Inspired by true events’. Not only is it different words but in an implied way gives them even more artistic license with the story they are telling.
How much license did they take with this ‘Inspired by true events’ story? Here is the official description of what is going on:
“Matthew McConaughey portrays real-life Texas electrician Ron Woodroof, an ordinary man who found himself in a life-or-death battle with the medical establishment and pharmaceutical companies. In 1985, Ron was blindsided by being diagnosed as H.I.V.-positive and given 30 days to live. Ron grabbed hold of non-toxic alternative treatments from all over the world by means both legal and illegal. Seeking to avoid government sanctions against selling non-approved medicines and supplements, he established a “buyers’ club,” which fellow H.I.V.-positive people could join for access to his supplies.”
For me, as long as they have the gist of the story correct I’m onboard and from everything I can find it looks like they have; so I’m onboard. With this one, even if they didn’t I would have been there. Why you ask? That’s simple; Matthew McConaughey. That man is really hitting his stride as an actor the last few years. The roles that he has taken on and the performances he has turned in have been just short of spectacular, and this one could and should push him past. The man transformed himself into Ron Woodroof. He lost almost 40lbs and nearly went blind in the process. Crazy? A bit. Committed? You better believe it. I respect anyone who can dedicate themselves that much for something like this.
Not to be out done Jared Leto stepped in, after a four year hiatus from acting, and lost around 30lbs to play a transgendered HIV/AIDS victim who partners with MM’s character to help others like them. Yes, Leto is a musician who turned actor, but he is so talented I think of him as an actor first. I will be surprised, no, shocked if these two don’t get nominated for the big awards when the season rolls around. They deserve it.
The ‘Dallas Buyers Club’ hits US theaters November 1st. Look for the first nominations December 11th and 12th.
