There were always stories of the strange and unusual things Nazi scientists were experimenting with before and during war time. Hollywood has tapped into those possibilities on countless occasions and then ratcheted up the crazy. My favorite is the fake trailer ‘Werewolf Women of the SS’ directed by Mr. Rob Zombie for the Grindhouse movies. This movie just might be a close second.
The official description goes like this:
“’Frankenstein’s Army’ takes place toward the end of World War II as Russian soldiers push into eastern Germany and stumble across a secret Nazi lab, one that has unearthed and begun experimenting with the journal of one Dr. Viktor Frankenstein. The scientists have used the legendary Frankenstein’s work to assemble an army of super-soldiers stitched together from the body parts of their fallen comrades – a desperate Hitler’s last ghastly ploy to escape defeat.”
I’m on board. The whole thing has a very dark, bleak look and feel to it. Very foreboding. It has that ‘I’m gonna make your skin crawl. No seriously, I have a guy who’s working on that’ feel to it. But the thing that really hooked me is the use of practical makeup effects. I love practical effects. It’s why ‘Thir13en Ghosts’ is one of my favorite modern horror movies. Yes, I know the house was all digitally rendered, but the ghosts were all done practically.
Actors in makeup bring that little extra sense of real to the movie. Don’t get me wrong I enjoy a good CGI movie too, but you can’t deny the appeal of a movie where the heroes are being chased around the set by a real person in full makeup… not just some grip holding a stick with a tennis ball on the end of it.
Whatever your preference this is getting a limited release here in the US at the end of the month. Find it, watch it, or Viktor will piece together Adolf and send him after you! MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA…. Too soon?
NSFW: Here is the Red Band Trailer. It shows a little more of the blood and gore.
